I wanted to take a second to answer a few of them.

"Make it look less like Tokyo"
Interesting comment. While I appreciate your perspective (and I can imagine Godzilla appearing at any moment), a lot of very talented people put in a lot of hours making our building as beautiful and as usable as they could. I think it looks quite nice personally and there have been lots of positive feedback. Did you have a specific Tokyo type comment?

"Hi this is a student at GWC who is taking 15 units and needs access to a computer but because there is only a limited amount of computers so because of it I can not get homework or classwork done so I think that if would be a very good idea to get more computers. I also know I’m not the only student in this situation. I believe that me and other students would really appreciate it a lot. Thank you! "
Again, thanks for your feedback. We are aware of the lack of computers and are working on a/ solution(s). One possibility is to check into the first floor and utilize the student computer center - its also free. We are working on making our Library Classroom also available for students to use as a open lab. More information to come soon on this project.

We are officially open and as I write this we are actually completely full.
Not a study seat is open, computers are full and the students (you all) are using the "poofs" magnificently.

I am the new blog writer and I want to hear from you.
What are the things you want to see in the library, programs offered through the library, or other ideas that would help you all succeed.

Hi everyone!
The library will have a new home soon.
Yipee!

We will be moving to the new LRC building (on the Golden West street side of campus) starting on Wednesday July 27th. Therefore, the library will be closed starting Friday July 22nd and will reopen the first day of school on August 29th.

If you have fines or fees - please call us during this period of time (714-895-8741) and we would be happy to assist you. If we don't answer just leave a message and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

Two Ways to Access the Library Database Passwords

Inside the library, you will have access to all of the databases, but outside of the library, you will be required to enter a username and password to search the databases from off campus. Username and password sheets can be obtained two ways.

1. Go to the GWC Reference Desk and present your student I.D. card, with your current registration sticker, indicating that you are currently enrolled. You can sign-up for the passwords with a librarian. All databases can be accessed from off campus except for Project Muse.

2. Another way is to go to MyGWC and log-into your online course. After, click on the link that says “GWC LIBRARY REMOTE ACCESS.” This handout contains the usernames and passwords to log onto the databases from off campus. The directions on how to log on are on the handout. See image below.

Mutual Borrowing Agreements

Did you know the Golden West College Library is a member of the CalWest Consortium?

Students, faculty, and staff from each of these colleges may borrow materials from the libraries of any of the member colleges.

Cypress College Library, Fullerton College Library, Orange Coast College Library, Coastline Community College Library

In addition, the Golden West College Library has mutual borrowing agreement with California State University, Long Beach ( CSULBLibrary ) and Golden West College Library have agreed to extend mutual borrowing privileges of non-reserve library materials to students, faculty, and staff of both colleges beginning in Fall 2002.

Why not visit the GWC Library where we have a designated Group Study Room available on the first floor, providing quick access to the library's numerous reference books, databases, and computers. The group study tables are available on a first come first serve basis and wireless access for laptop users is available. One table can even seat a maximum of eight students.

GWC Library Introduces Two New Online Tutorials

Do you need to find a book for your research paper but aren't sure which search tool to use on the GWC Library website? Julie Davis, the GWC Instructional Librarian, has created two exceptional online tutorials teaching you how to use the GWC catalog and Net Library, two search tools that are your gateway to the book collection in the GWC library. The online tutorials walk you step by step in the use of these library search tools, gradually teaching you the basic skills you need in finding the most relevant books for your research. The online tutorials are available on the Library home page.

OVID SP Nursing Database Now Available for 2009

Nursing@Ovid is now available at GWC Library. OVID is a portal-based solution for nursing and allied health practitioners, researchers, educators, and students. Full-text articles are available from some of the most relevant nursing publications available in the field. Remote access for off-campus use is available. The GWC Library welcomes and appreciates all comments from students. In this blog posting, we want to share some of our most recent comments & our responses.

Question:
1. I believe that there needs to be computers set aside with a time limit (i.e. 5 minutes) so that students who need to check their campus email are not impeded by others who want to use provided computers for other than educational endeavors.

Response to #1: Thank you for this comment, I agree it would be nice to have such a station. The computers with internet, at this point, are first come first served. Attached is the library policy on computers and their use. http://www.goldenwestcollege.edu/library/pdf/tlcpolicy2.pdf
Additionally, when the computers get busy, librarians do try to make announcements that the computers are primarily for education-related projects.

Questions:
2. More computers
3. Please, We need more computers for the students. Thank you.

Response to #2 and #3: I agree. We hope to have our second computer classroom back in service for student’s to use to work on assignments by spring session. However, until that time we hope that students curtail their recreational use (ex: Myspace).

Question:
4. There is a need for more student computers in the library. When checking out a reserved book, the book must stay in the library and when there’s a time limit for how long you can have the book out, but there’s no computers, your (out) of luck!

Response to #4: See response above, and we have asked for additional reserve book money
from the Association Students, the hope is that for items that have heavy use – we could purchase a second copy of the reserve textbook that can be taken out of the library.

Question:
5. I believe by having the library open on the weekends we will be able to finish most of our works and turning it on time. Thank you.

Response to #5: We are looking into this possibility, but in light of the budget cuts this may have to wait for a period of time for us to focus on maintaining current hours and services. As an alternative you can go to OCC’s library they have some weekend hours.

6. The computer next to the print station is being used by people who do not want to print but are finishing papers and using the computer for other than printing activities.

New Learning Resource Center: Construction Begins

On October 2nd, 2008, the Learning Resource Center officially broke ground. The LRC project is scheduled for completion in two years. The Learning Resource Center will house the library on the second and third floor.

Online Renewals for Books Available

You can renew your books one time for three weeks anywhere on or off campus by simply accessing the Library Catalog and selecting "Online Renewals". Textbook Collection Reserve

We are excited to announce that the Student Textbook Access Reserve or STAR collection has been a huge success this year. The collection has been very popular with students. Here are the latest statistics for the 2007-2008 school year:

o 3,449 circulations for the academic year (fall 2007 to spring 2008)
o 220 STAR purchased titles
o 128 faculty donated textbook titles (numbers not included in this STAR report)
o 31 titles circulated over 36 times (statistically equals once a week)
o 15.68 was the average number of circulations (which is 3 times the aim of 5 circs)
o 12 titles circulated over 50 times
o 6 titles circulated over 100 times
o Calculus: Single Variable (Math 180) 182 times
o University Physics – 12th edition (Phys 185/280) 144 times
o Biology – 7th edition (Bio 180) 133 times
o Exploring Psychology – 7th edition (Psych 100) 123 times
o Essentials of Sociology: A Down to Earth Approach (Soc 100) 110 times
o Chemistry – 9th edition (Chem 180/185) 105 times

Library Courses

The library is offering two, independent study, one unit classes that are UC and CSU transferable this semester. Enrollment is open.

In Library 110: Introduction to Library Research, students learn about libraries, computer catalogs, periodical indexes, print resources, and other library resources. Library 100 is offered as an in-person course or in hybrid format. Students have the option to take this course for credit/no credit or for a letter grade.

Library 120: Libraries and the Internet, provides students with an introduction to Internet research, using search engines, virtual libraries, and online databases. Students learn how to use online research tools available in the library with a variety of hand-on activities. The course is offered in an online format only.

New Library Databases Available

We are excited to offer online E-books for the first time. Net Library 6 & 7 provides access to over 6000 E-books covering a wide variety of topics.

Also for spring 2008, we have added ProQuest Newspapers. Find full-text newspaper articles from the L.A. Times, N.Y. Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal & the Christian Science Monitor. ProQuest Newspapers is updated daily, and allows you to e-mail and print individual articles.

2008 Election Web Sites

• CQPolitics. A free news site provided by Congressional Quarterly (CQ) with political news, political blogs (such as Taegan Goddard’s Political Wire) and articles. The site includes a political toolkit with links to other Web sites that have a connection to CQ, as well as links to non-CQ “Web Picks.” Visitors can also sign up for free newsletters. Access: http://www.cqpolitics.com/.

• Politico and Campus Politico. This extensive political news site from Capital News Company covers the presidential campaign and other political events and issues. The site includes video clips and an open forum for commentary. Campus Politico focuses on college-age voters, and includes links to social networking sites and downloadable widgets that provide updated blog postings from Politico writers. Access: http://www.politico.com/campuspolitico/.

• Project Vote Smart. One of the first political information sites on the Web, Project Vote Smart provides an extensive amount of information about elected officials, including voting records (congressional and legislative), special interest group performance evaluations, campaign finance data, and issue positions from the Political Courage Test (formerly known as the National Political Awareness Test). The site also provides general political information, including voter registration information, information on statewide ballot measures, and links to other resources.
