GOLDEN WEST COLLEGE DEAN ALEX MIRANDA
HONORED FOR INNOVATIVE EDUCATIONAL INTERVENTIONS
Golden West College Dean of Library and Learning Resources, Alex Miranda recognized by the League for Innovation in the Community College with a 2015 John and Suanne Roueche Excellence Award
COSTA MESA, CA – On March 23, 2016 in Chicago, IL, the League for Innovation in the Community College will present John and Suanne Roueche Excellence Awards to the nation’s most innovative community college faculty, staff and administration who have demonstrated a commitment to innovative programs, practices, partnerships, policies and activities that improve the ability of institutions to serve students and the community.
Alex Miranda, Golden West College (GWC) Dean of Library and Learning Resources was one of 29 awardees to be recognized in California and the only awardee in Orange County. His impressive work with the GWC math intervention “Jump Start” program has been celebrated throughout the Coast District earning him a solid nomination for the award. The Jump Start program has successfully prepared cohorts of high school students to progress from beginner math courses to intermediate or college level courses in eight weeks.
“I am inspired by the moments in which students realize that they are able to learn,” explained Alex Miranda. “This realization leads them to success and certainty in direction. This process of change has far-reaching implications for a young person’s identity, life, and future.” Alex went on to say, “The success that has been attributed to me as an administrator, academic, and scholar has originated from the work of many, support from administrators, my determination to succeed, my learning about effective and positive educational interventions, and my faith in the potential of each student who trusts me with her/his education.”
The John and Suanne Roueche Awards, established in 2012, are in honor of community college leaders, John E. and Suanne D. Roueche who were early proponents of the idea that teachers have major responsibility for how well students perform in the classroom. These awards are open to League Alliance member institutions to celebrate outstanding contributions and leadership by community college faculty and staff. Dean Alex Miranda will be recognized in a series of activities and promotions, and honored at special events at the League's Innovations conference.
Dean Alex Miranda’s statement and video submission can be found on the award recipient website.
